![]() ![]() No side character is worth me mentioning with the exception of Urie (half ghoul investigator who works under Haise) who has untapped potential as of now. I was constantly wanting him to return to being Kaneki against his will because I was so damn tired of Haise's babbling. Every time he speaks it's something about how much he loves his life or how he doesn't want to be Kaneki again because he loves his life so much right now. It's essentially impossible to get anything more than that out of his character. His only character trait is that he cares about his friends and his current lifestyle. Haise has to be the most boring main character I've seen all season, maybe all year. This is actually the worst part of the show. The sound does almost nothing to improve this adaptation. All the background music is mediocre and totally forgettable. The ending is also fine but kind of weird and not worth adding to any kind of playlist. The opening is good but not nearly as good as the original. Not one fight sequence is cool or impressive and the art can also be incredibly inconsistent at times.Īlso a big step down. It's production budget is likely close to half of the original and it shows. A show that could be praised for it's stellar animation and dark edgy art has fallen so so low. The drop in animation quality is actually both astounding and depressing. They're all gone and replaced with Haise's boring crew of half ghoul investigators and a bunch of ghouls who's most interesting and human trait is that they don't want to die. And no more ghouls that are worth caring about. Kaneki and friends constantly tried to balance peace and protecting their friends and that's part of what made the show great. It presented an incredibly difficult and interesting conflict where ghouls and humans desperately want peace but simply cannot coexist. One thing I found so great about the original is that the man-eating ghouls whoĬouldn't possibly seen as good people were constantly and effectively humanized through the folks at Anteiku. Not a single fight is cool, interesting, or well animated, and not a single character is as good as a character from season one. Basically it's just 12 episodes of Haise and his new buddies fighting ghouls. I'm not sure that a single interesting thing has happened in 12 episodes. At least it’s over, and we can talk more about it as a whole season later.Tokyo Ghoul except everything that was good is bad.Īs a fan of the first two seasons I can't see this season as anything other than a massive failure and disappointment. How is this possible? Touka has been a waste this season, first with doing nothing, then slapping Kaneki clear away from her, to not being able to get him back at the end. This seems to be the microcosm to the entire season, where there has been a lot going on, but the feeling was like nothing was going on. What was the point? This was the silliest crap I’ve seen. What was the point of having Touka in this episode? All she did was run after Kaneki, until Yomo stops her. Hell, even the lyrics fit the scene very well. It’s slow, somber, and fits the mood perfectly. As you watch this scene, the imagery is there, but the real vehicle to drive this scene home is the music. As Kaneki is walking down the road towards the CCG, everyone that isn’t dying has guns out, trained on Kaneki’s head. The dead soldiers, Monkeys, Dogs, Jouzza, and the rest of the CCG force, all trying to recoup. Why not just send her off?Īnyway, from the 15 minute mark, forward, you get to see the aftermath of what was going on. After her brother just ripped her Ghoul wings off of her, she was relegated to nothingness. This was as bad as Touka’s space this season. Why put the end off screen, and then have half of the episode be flashbacks? This was garbage and lazy. What got me here, is that there was a two episode war going on, and the war ended off screen. All the while, it was really Hide who was bleeding out, and ultimately died. The animators and writers play on Kaneki’s injuries from last week, and make it seem like Kaneki was bleeding out. That said, there is a great scene in the beginning of “Ken,” where Kaneki and Hide are talking, and blood is pooling on the ground. I figured that there would be a lot more going on here instead of Kaneki just fumbling around with flashbacks while his friend Hide is there trying to talk to him. “Ken” is a terribly mixed bag of good and bad. ![]()
